Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, acts as a co-enzyme or a cofactor for enzymes involved in metabolism of fatty acids, amino acids, and in assisting gluconeogenesis. Our body maintains specific levels of biotin, exceeding which gives rise to several health disorders.

Why is Too Much Biotin Bad for You?

Side effects and bad symptoms show up due to presence of excess biotin inside the body. This usually happens from consuming biotin rich supplements (medications and pills) in excess and continuing a biotin rich diet for a long period.

Scientists and doctors are still trying to explore the side effects of biotin in details. Clinical trials and animal research studies are the media to carry out scientific research. It has been found out from case studies that biotin overdose leads to a life-threatening condition, known as eosinophilic pleuropericardial effusion. This disorder is caused due to over consumption of biotin and vitamin B5, simultaneously.

A test conducted on pregnant mice showed that high doses of biotin increased the possibility of miscarriages. The study also showed birth defects associated with overdose of biotin. This probably occurred due to shrinkage of the placenta. Although the research was a success in animals, scientists are yet to confirm the same results in pregnant women.

Biotin is essential for growth of nails and hair in human beings. But what if there is excess of biotin inside the body? Presence of high levels of biotin inside the body can lead to abnormal growth of nails and hair. It also causes frequent urination and excessive sweating.

Biotin Dosage

Biotin supplements are prescribed by doctors to people who are deficient in biotin. According to National Institute of Health, 200 mg of biotin has also been used for medical treatment.
