Urine stains on mattresses are quite common when there are babies and pets in the house. In case you are a mother, you probably know how common bed-wetting is when your child is in his/her growing years. Even though your baby wears a diaper all the time or you use plastic sheets or an oilcloth in bed, you may still face the problem of cleaning urine off the mattress. Apart from stains, the worst part is to get rid of the pungent odor of urine. Cleaning urine from a crib mattress is not a big thing; you can carry it easily, clean it in a convenient place and dry it in the sun. But, what if your baby manages to pee in a king-sized mattress that you cannot even lift on your own. Do not be under the impression that the mattress is soiled and you cannot reuse it. Rather, you can follow simple ways for removing urine marks from bed mattresses.
Blotting Up Urine: The first step in cleaning mattresses is soaking up urine traces by using a dry absorbent towel. Place towel over the wet mattress and press it so as to absorb urine as much as possible. Take out bedding and other adhering covers, and wash them with warm water and detergent.
Spraying White Vinegar: The best way to remove a urine stain from a mattress is by spraying the smeared portion with white vinegar. In a spray bottle, combine two parts of lukewarm water and one part distilled white vinegar. Shake the solution very well and spray it over the stain. Then, absorb with a paper towel and spray again. Repeat these steps alternately to remove the urine stain and stench from your mattress. You can also apply some laundry detergent on the sullied area first, if the urine stain is fresh. Scrub the area with a wash cloth and water after that and then follow it up by pouring some vinegar on the area.
Using a Carpet Cleaner: In order to remove the stain from the mattress, what you can do is clean the stain with a carpet upholstery cleaner. Go through the manufacturer's instructions provided in the cleaning product before you use it. You may be required to apply some amount of cleaner on the urine stain and allow it to stand for a stipulated amount of time. Then, scrub the cleaner with a towel and warm water.
Cleaning with Baking Soda or Borax: Using baking soda or borax is a sure way to remove the smell urine from mattresses. Spread a cup full of baking soda or borax over the urine stain and cover it with a plastic sheet. Leave it on the mattress overnight. Next day, take out the plastic sheet and remove baking soda or borax from the mattress by vacuum cleaning.
Sponging with Hydrogen Peroxide: Dilute hydrogen peroxide mixed with baking soda is a proven concoction to remove urine stain and odor from mattresses. Mix ½ a cup of vinegar, a cup water and 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide. Rub this concoction over the urine stain and leave for 30 minutes. Then, remove the mixture and scrub the area to get rid of stains.
Spray the mattress with a superior quality disinfectant to kill germs (if any) and also, to leave the mattress with a fresh scent. Remember to open windows and switch on the ceiling fan to drive away the smell. As with any stain removal task, acting quickly is the thumb rule to remove stain and odor easily.
