The ancient Babylonians are believed to be the first ones to make soap, using a combination of water, cassia oil, and an alkali. Ancient Egyptians used soap made from animal fats, vegetable oils, and alkaline salts, for bathing and cleaning wool. Archaeologists even found a full-fledged soap factory in the ruins of Pompeii. Even the ancient Arabs used soap made from various vegetable and aromatic oils.

Soap making is not a complicated process, and can be easily picked up by a beginner. Soap can be made at home without specialized equipment. It can be made by the cold or the hot process. The cold process involves mixing of ingredients like lye and sodium hydroxide, along with measured quantities of fats. The mixture is then allowed to cool and set overnight. The hot process involves the application of heat. The lye solution is brought to a boil, and then mixed with the fats and oils. An infusion of salt then ensures the solidification of the soap.

Another popular method of making soap is the 'melt and pour' system. In this method one melts actual soap and other ingredients like oats, petals, milk, moisturizing oils, or essential oils, etc. are then added into the molten mix, to create a customized soap. This base soap required to prepare custom-made soaps, is available in most handicraft outlets. The molds required are also easily available in such stores.

There are various advantages of using homemade soap. Firstly, it is cost-effective. Secondly, homemade soap is far more skin-friendly than industrial soap. This is because it has a higher fat content than industrially manufactured soap. This ensures that the skin does not dry out, as often happens with certain manufactured soaps. Moreover, one can customize homemade soap by including emollients such as jojoba oil, Shea butter, or glycerin. Such soap is excellent for various skin problems.
