Mike Keene -- Looking for Another "Tattoo"
You won't find him on the pages of GQ Magazine, but Mike Keene knows how to make a fashion statement. On his ankle is a tattoo for all the Stanley Cups he's won. So far he's has three and counting.
Mike Keene of the Colorado Avalanche has been in the NHL for 15 years and is one of the veterans on a team that has several veterans.
This is his second go round with the Avs, having been traded with good friend and fellow Avalanche veteran Patrick Roy from Montreal in 1995.
After 15 seasons and 1,000-plus games in the NHL, one wouldn't call him a trendsetter. In a way though, he is.
On his ankle, Keene has not one, but three tattoos of the Stanley Cup. One for each of the Stanley Cups he's won while playing for Colorado, Montreal and Dallas.
The native from the Canadian province of Manitoba wasn't drafted by any NHL team after playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League. He signed as a free agent with Montreal in 1985, and was sent to Montreal's American Hockey League farm club in Sherbrooke.
There he scored 25 goals, but that wasn't what excited the Montreal Canadiens. It was his feisty manner that got them excited, and that part of his game hasn't changed a bit. While one wouldn't label him a dirty player, he will drop his gloves if the situation calls for it.
While Joe Sakic may wear the "C" for captain of the Avalanche, Keene, being one of the veterans, will stick his two cents into the mix. That's part of being one of the leaders in the Colorado lockerroom.
In 15 years of hockey, Keene has seen a lot of changes in the game and in the way it's played. One has to adapt to those changes and if those changes help the Avalanche win another Stanley Cup, Mike Keene is all for it.
He's also more than ready to add another tattoo to his ankle.
