It's Vegas! It's the AVP Shootout! (Final Day Results)
In the final AVP Tour event of the season, Misty May/Kerri Walsh and Dain Blanton/Jeff Nygaard captured the women's and men's titles, respectively, at the AVP Shootout in Las Vegas. Read on for the details.
In the final women's match of the 2003 AVP Nissan Series, Misty May (Long Beach, CA) and partner Kerri Walsh (Manhattan Beach, CA) captured their seventh title of the year and finished with a perfect season by defeating Holly McPeak (Manhattan Beach, CA) and Elaine Youngs (Durango, CO) 21-16, 21-13 at the Aquafina Shootout presented by Bud Light at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
In the men's final, Dain Blanton (Laguna Beach, CA) and Jeff Nygaard (Los Angeles, CA) defeated Scott Ayakatubby (Hermosa Beach, CA) and Brian Lewis (Laguna Beach, CA) 21-13, 21-19 to capture the title.
This victory gave Blanton and Nygaard their third title this season and back to back victories as the tandem captured the title last week in Chicago. Blanton and Nygaard remained as the only team this season to win multiple titles.
May and Walsh have gone 39-0 this season which is an AVP Tour record. By winning the Aquafina Shootout, not only did May and Walsh take home the first place purse of $30,000, but clinched the AVP Nissan Series overall title and will take home a new Nissan automobile of their choice as reward.
"When we play it's tough to beat us, we wanted to stay number one all season on the AVP Tour to win those Nissan cars," said Kerri Walsh. "Being in Las Vegas and ending the season is a fun event, but you have to earn the right to go out and party and we have," said Misty May.
To reach the finals, May and Walsh beat fourth seeds Carrie Busch (El Segundo, CA) and Leanne Schuster McSorley (Manhattan Beach, CA) 21-10, 21-11. McPeak and Youngs defeated third seeds Annett Davis (Tarzana, CA) and Jenny Johnson Jordan in three games 21-19, 21-17, 15-10 in the other semifinals.
May and Walsh have gone 39-0 never losing a match the whose season, which has never been done on the AVP Tour. They not only take home the first place purse of $30,000 but have clinched the AVP Nissan Series and will take home a new Nissan automobile of their choice.
