Blair Backs London Bid

London's 2012 bid: Prime Minister Tony Blair has said London's bid to stage the 2012 Games is "strong and getting ever stronger".
London's bid to stage the 2012 Olympics is "strong and getting ever stronger", Prime Minister Tony Blair said today.

Mr Blair praised the performance of Team GB in Athens and said there was a growing realisation that London was a real contender to hold the Games.

"There is an increasing view that London's bid for 2012 is strong and getting ever stronger," he said.

At his monthly Downing Street press conference, Mr Blair said London's sporting facilities were rapidly being improved with Wembley Stadium due for completion in 2006 and the Millennium Dome being transformed into a 20,000-seat arena the year after.

Mr Blair said Lord Coe, who heads the London bid, would make a presentation to the Cabinet next Thursday.

"The Government is 100% behind the bid," he said. "Hosting the Games would be a tremendous thing for the country and a tremendous thing obviously for British sport."
