Wild Card Sets Up Agassi Clash
Tennis: American wild card James Blake stunned Tommy Robredo to set up a quarter-final date with Andre Agassi, while Mary Pierce stormed past Justine Henin-Hardenne to face Amelie Mauresmo.
American wild card James Blake will face Andre Agassi in the quarter-finals of the US Open aftering producing another stunning result to beat 19th seed Tommy Robredo 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3.
Two days after dumping second seed Rafael Nadal out of the tournament, Blake found his form late in the second set against Robredo and took the match with ease.
"I don't know how I did it," Blake said.
Meanwhile eighth seed Guillermo Coria of Argentina beat Chilean Nicolas Massu 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-2 in four hours and 32 minutes - the longest match of the tournament so far.
After the testy match, featuring a combined 15 breaks of serve, Coria jumped over the net and gave a half-hearted hand slap to Massu before hugging his entourage.
Coria will meet Robby Ginepri in the quarter-finals after the American beat 13th seed Richard Gasquet of France 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (8/10), 6-4, 6-0 in the last match of the day.
In the women's tournament, last year's runner-up Elena Dementieva faces a tough quarter-final meeting with in-form Lindsay Davenport after beating Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-3.
Third seed Amelie Mauresmo of France extended her winning streak over 19th-seeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva to seven matches with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph to reach her third Grand Slam quarter-final of the year.
Mauresmo now faces 12th seed Mary Pierce, who stunned the red-hot Justine Henin-Hardenne 6-3, 6-4.
Pierce jumped ahead at 5-0 in the first set before holding on and was far more effective than the erratic Henin-Hardenne, avenging her loss in the French Open final three months ago and defeating the 2003 US Open champion for the first time in five tries.
