It's Vegas! It's the AVP Shootout! (Day 1 results)
The Hard Rock Hotel parking lot in Las Vegas was transformed into a beach for the AVP Shootout this weekend, a single elimination tournament featuring the top eight men and women teams from the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.
The AVP Shootout kicked off the first day of action at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
The Hard Rock Hotel parking lot was transformed into a complete beach stadium for this single elimination tournament featuring the top eight men and women teams from the AVP Nissan Series Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.
The first men's match featured the third seeded team of Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, CA) and Larry Witt (Santa Ynez, CA) who defeated and eliminated the sixth seeded team of Matt Fuerbringer (Hermosa Beach, CA) and hometown favorite Casey Jennings (Manhattan Beach, CA) 21-19, 21-18, 15-12. With the win, Rosenthal and Witt moved into the semifinals on Saturday.
The other men's match featured a replay of last weekend's AVP Chicago Open final with the second seeded team of Canyon Ceman (Los Angeles, CA) and partner Mike Whitmarsh (San Diego, CA) taking on the seventh seeds Dain Blanton (Laguna Beach, CA) and Jeff Nygaard (Los Angeles, CA). The outcome was the same as last weekend, as Blanton and Nygaard defeated Ceman and Whitmarsh 21-15, 21-15 to advance to Saturday's semifinal against Rosenthal and Witt.
Women's action brought together the fourth seeds Carrie Busch, (El Segundo, CA) and Leanne Schuster McSorley (Manhattan Beach, CA) battling the fifth seeded team of Jennifer Meredith (El Segundo, CA) and Wendy Stammer (Tigard, OR). In a grueling three game match, Busch and McSorley went on to defeat Meredith and Stammer 17-21, 21-12, 22-20 to advance to the women's semis on Saturday.
The second women's match of the day featured the number one seeded team of Misty May (Long Beach, CA) and Kerri Walsh (Manhattan Beach, CA) taking on the eighth seeded team of Angie Akers (Long Beach, CA) and Sarah Straton (Hermosa Beach, CA). May and Walsh brought their consecutive match winning streak to 37 by defeating Akers and Straton 21-15, 21-15. They move on to the women's semis on Saturday, and will battle Busch and McSorley.
All teams eliminated from Friday's action will split $3,750. Play continues on Friday with the first game at 3 p.m., with Saturday's action starting at 2 p.m.
