ChampionsWorld a hit in Toronto
The ChampionsWorld Tour headed north to Toronto this year and the reviews were positive. Record crowds took in the two game series played in the Skydome, hopefully paving the way for professional soccer to make its way to the Big Smoke.
The ChampionsWorld Tour touched down in Toronto this summer and the results were staggering. The two games played at the Skydome drew well over 90,000 fans, providing for some boisterous crowds.
The main event was played on July 31st when Scottish powerhouse, Glasgow Celtic, faced Italian Serie A heavyweight, AS Roma, in front of 50,168 frenzied fans. Spectators were treated to a magnificent display of soccer as a star studded Roma side controlled the flow of play. Francesco Totti scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute of play with a looping header from a well placed Gaetano D'Agostino cross.
Totti's performances during the ChampionsWorld Tour were reminiscent of his 2000/2001 form that saw Roma capture the Serie A title. Italy boss, Marcello Lippi, will be happy to see Totti back at his best after putting the disappointment of Euro 2004 well behind him.
In 2005, organizers of the ChampionsWorld Series will undoubtedly look to build on the tremendous success that the tour experienced in Toronto. Hopefully, Toronto can look forward to seeing Roma, along with some of the other Serie A giants, making a return visit to the friendly confines of the Skydome.
