Ryan Millar scored a match-high 17 points as the USA men's national volleyball team notched a 3-0 win over Guatemala to remain unbeaten in pool play at the 2003 NORCECA Zone Championships Firday in Culiacan, Mexico.
Millar (Palmdale, Calif.) had eight kills, five service aces and four blocks in the 25-15, 25-21, 25-13 victory as Team USA improved its record in Pool B to 2-0 with one match remaining.
The United States plays another unbeaten team, host Mexico (2-0), in the pool play finale Saturday night. The winner earns an automatic berth in the tournament semifinals Monday night, while the loser will advance to the quarterfinals as the No. 2 team from Pool B.
For the second match in a row, Team USA dominated the competition. The Americans (12-3 overall this season) posted a hitting percentage of .500 for the match and amassed 10 blocks and seven service aces. Guatemala recorded a negative hitting percentage (-.018) with just three blocks and two aces.
Dave McKienzie (Littleton, Colo.) added eight points on six kills, one block and one ace for the United States, while 2000 Olympians Kevin Barnett (Naperville, Ill.) and Tom Hoff (Park Ridge, Ill.) scored six points apiece. Barnett blasted six kills, while Hoff added four kills and two blocks.
Mac Wilson (Palmdale, Calif.) scored five points on five kills with a hitting percentage of 1.000, while Riley Salmon (League City, Texas) chipped in with four points on four kills.
Lloy Ball (Woodburn, Ind.) and Donald Suxho (Los Angeles, Calif.) split the setting duties while libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) registered eight digs.
The NORCECA Championship is crucial because it serves as a qualifier to the first Olympic qualifier, the World Cup, which is scheduled for Nov. 16-30 in Japan. The top two NORCECA finishers earn automatic bids to the World Cup. The top three teams at the World Cup automatically qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
