Who forgot to tell the Redskins that there was a game this past Monday night?
The Skins, still stinging from a 30-3 thrashing at the hands of the San Diego Chargers, came out flat yet again. The Packers, on the other hand, emerged from the locker room led by Chris Gizzi bearing an American flag.
Gizzi is a Packer linebacker, but in this time of crisis his Air Force reservist duties would come first if called upon. The Packers played as if they had the newly rejuvenated strength and unity of America (including the 59,771 people that filled the stands) behind them.
Brett Favre continued his strong start to the season with a 236 yard and three touchdown effort. He hit Bill Schroeder and Antonio Freeman for TD's. Favre also continued to show his confidence in his young tight ends, hitting David Martin with a 31-yard pass down the middle of the field, and delivering a four-yard TD strike to Bubba Franks in the fourth quarter. Ryan Longwell chipped in with the extra points to go along with a three-for-three night in the field goal department. Rondell Mealey added insult to..well, embarrassment, by returning a late fumble 27 yards to pay dirt.
With their first shutout since blanking the Raiders back in 1993, and the Redskins' first road shutout since 1971, the Packers continue to show that they are a much improved team from last year's squad. Thus proving that (up to this point) Mike Sherman is more than capable of taking care of both the head coach and GM positions.
The embarrassing start to Washington's season has led to the release of quarterback Jeff George. The Redskins' woes at QB should make Packer fans step back and truly enjoy the gem we have at that position, Brett Favre. Coincidentally, in the midst of this shellacking, Favre became the 12th QB in NFL history to surpass 35,000 career passing yards. Enjoy his brilliance while you can!
If this is America's "return to normalcy," I, as well as all Packer fans, will rejoice if this is normal play by the Pack. Nearly three times as many first downs than Washington, out gaining the Skins 386-137 net yards, all translating into a 37-0 victory.
Up next..the Carolina Panthers! (The last team to beat the Green & Gold).
Until next week...GO PACK!!
