Genealogy: Family Genealogy Search

In the past, searching for the members to fill your family genealogy tree required countless hours spent in libraries and old record offices.
In recent years, The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) have compiled genealogical records that are very extensive, but only available in select locations. The World Wide Web offers a new way to make this search more enjoyable and expedient. There are many web sites available, offering genealogical databases and researching tips. Forums are available to post information and queries, as well as offer a chance to contact family members. Many of these sites are organized according to region and ethnicity and can be found by using most search engines.

Ancestry.com provides researching tips, along with an online store featuring genealogical books and CD ROMs. This site offers a free trial membership that allows a user to access hundreds of databases, including Social Security, vital records, and ethnic specific databases. The membership also entitles the user to a collaborative family web page that can be updated by people included on the list provided by the user.

Many families begin searching for their ancestors in the traditional, time consuming fashion. With the creation of the World Wide Web, a new resource is available for those searching for their family's past. Most sites feature extensive databases as well as tips on researching your family tree. Using these resources will make filling in the blanks of that tree a more fun and interactive process.
