In the first royal marriage in Italy for more than 50 years Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy has married a French actor, Clotilde Courau, who is six months pregnant with their first child.
The occasion in Rome yesterday was so hastily arranged that the invitations reached the guests only at the end of last week.
The community of reigning royal families was represented by the best man, Prince Albert of Monaco, who had introduced the couple.
Ms Courau, 34, is a departure from the run-of-the-mill royal bride - an actor with a solid film career behind her.
The best-known of the 1,200 guests were perhaps the fashion designers Pierre Cardin and Valentino Garavani. The latter made the bride's empire-waisted dress.
Emanuele Filiberto, 31, would be heir to the throne if there were one. He grew up in Switzerland, and went to Italy for the first time last December after the Savoy's constitutional exile in perpetuity was scrapped.
