A Turkish court yesterday blocked a university conference on the Armenian genocide, prompting an angry rebuke from Brussels 10 days before the start of EU membership talks.
The European Commission accused the Istanbul court of provocative behaviour after it barred the conference until two universities provided more information on the speakers.
Krisztina Nagy, EC spokeswoman, said: "We strongly deplore this attempt to stop Turkish society discussing its history. The absence of legal motivations and the [timing] of this ... looks like yet another provocation."
