Friday morning questions -- NCAA style

This week in college football, it's back-to-work, but not back-to-normal. Here's some thoughts.

1) After rightfully canceling games last week will it be back to work as usual this Saturday for the college football world? Absolutely Not. What makes college football different from the NFL is raw emotion. The country is numb, and sports are the last thing on anyone's mind. These young men will go out and give an A+ effort, but you have to feel that a sense of dread will be hanging over us all. Additionally, the games aren't that good. With the exception of USC at Oregon, Ohio State at UCLA, and possibly, Fresno State at Tulsa (The Cinderella Factor), there are no match-ups that are very inspiring.

2) When will Texas reveal it's true self? Probably not this week against Houston who the Longhorns will smoke, but Texas has gotten a lot of hype for potential and not results. You know they're going to lose. You know they're not worthy of a number five ranking. You know it's a travesty that Chris Simms is starting over Major Applewhite. When will they have their meltdown? I see Oklahoma on the horizon.

3) Can Fresno State's David Carr possibly win the Heisman trophy? Why not? He's been the most exciting player to watch this year and he already has a lot of national exposure (plus a Sports Illustrated cover). It's a real possibility. He has emerged as one of the nation's top quarterbacks gaining the interest of the NFL. In his last game against Wisconsin, Carr completed 22-of-38 for 240 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. In the big win against Oregon State he was 21-of-34 for 340 yards and four touchdowns. The only problem for Carr's campaign is the schedule: Tulsa, Louisiana Tech, Colorado St., Boise St., Hawaii, Rice, SMU, Nevada, San Jose St., Utah St. It looks like the hard part of the schedule is finished.

4) Was that really Notre Dame against Nebraska? That was a pathetic performance against an overrated Nebraska team. Bob Davies better learn how to handle his quarterbacks. You don't go yanking guys out after three series. If Notre Dame loses to Michigan State this week, it might be time to start assembling the Head Coach Search Committee.

5) How great is the city of New York? The best. No other city in the world could have handled itself with the courage, dignity and class like New York did last Tuesday. They got back on their feet quicker than anyone could have imagined and they will be at full strength shortly. They have a great Mayor, great people, and a fire department and a police department that are unbelievably heroic. I'm a Baltimore guy who has spent my life rooting against all things New York, but in the future, I am going to have a hard time cheering against the Yankees, Giants, Rangers and company.
