Please Mr. Ford, sell the Detroit Lions
The Lions are the joke of the NFL. The Ford family does not know who to hire to run a winning team. So, sell the team to an owner who has some clue on recruiting winners for an organization.
My dream for the Detroit Lions is to finally get an owner that wants to win at all costs and shows it by hiring the right people in the right positions.
Obviously, the William Clay Ford family does not have any clue on who to hire in the key positions with the Detroit Lions.
Their latest fiasco involves a commentator who they thought could run a team, Matt Millen, and an offensive coordinator who never has been a head coach, Marty Mornhinweg.
Why? These guys are like magicians. They turned a 9-7 team into the laughingstock of the NFL.
The M&M boys have a record of 2-16 since taking over the team. In fact, they only have one win in the preseason in two years.
So, would it help to fire Millen and Mornhinweg? It sure would. But, who would these idiots hire?
That is the question. Their track record of coaches includes guys like Darryl Rogers, Rick Forzano, Montie Clark, Wayne Fontes, Bobby Ross, and now the immortal Mornhinweg.
How did Millen receive his credentials as a general manager? I think he has taken too many helmet to helmet hits.
Why was he so enamored with Mornhinweg? Who knows? Mornhinweg never has his team ready to play.
The Carolina Panthers, who only won one game last year, looked like they were in a different league than the Lions on Sunday.
Mornhinweg has no idea how to handle QB's either. He throws in Joey Harrington here and there, while keeping Mike McMahon in for most of the game.
The quarterbacks are confused on who is playing, not to mention the offensive line and the receivers and running backs. In other words, the M&M boys have no plan whatsoever.
The Detroit Lions are having the opening game at their new beautiful stadium, aptly named Ford Field.
Maybe they can still change the name. Put a "For Sale" sign up in front of the stadium for the Lion's fans sake.
The Ford family decided the time for the Ford Escort was up, now just realize the time for the Ford ownership of the Lions is up.
If you hire people to run a team who have no experience whatsoever, you get what you deserve.
Why don't you just hire long time Lion fans to coach and evaluate talent? We knew Fontes and Ross had to go. We also knew Scott Mitchell and Charlie Batch were not first string quarterbacks in the NFL.
In fact, many people knew the M&M boys were not the right guys for leading the Lions to the Super Bowl. But, the Fords continue to hang onto people who are not right for the organization.
My suggestion to the Ford family is to hire people who have won the Super Bowl before.
Sure, I would rather have them sell the team to someone who knows the NFL business, but I know that they will never do that.
So, hire guys like Ron Wolf or Charlie Casserly or Bill Walsh to be a GM for the team.
Then lure a coach like Bill Parcells, Joe Gibbs, or Jimmie Johnson out or retirement to give them a new challenge.
The Red Wings didn't win until they got Scottie Bowman to lead the team. The Lions won't win unless they do something similar.
At the very least, as I mentioned a year or so ago, they should have went after Steve Spurrier to bring some excitement to the team.
As I final thought, I would just like to say to all future opponents of the Lions, "you are welcome for the easy win."
To those who want quality in the NFL, I apologize for the Detroit Lions.
To those who make highlight reels, I also apologize for making your life so difficult when you look for Lion highlights.
To the Lion fans, instead of not showing up at the new Ford Field, just never buy Ford vehicles again. This may be the only message we can send.
The Packers will open up Ford Field next week. Let me be the first to tell you, just show up and you will win.
