Motor Racing: Heidfeld Signs to Drive for New Bmw Team in 2006

Nick Heidfeld has left the Williams team to become the first driver to sign for the new BMW formula one team.
Nick Heidfeld is the first driver to sign a contract with the new BMW formula one team after committing to a three-year deal from the start of the 2006 season.

The 28-year-old from Manchengladbach became available this week after the Williams team did not take up their option on him for next season, allowing BMW, which acquired the Swiss-based Sauber team team in June, to make an offer.

BMW's motorsport director Mario Theissen said they were delighted. "He is not simply a fast and courageous driver, he is also an analytical and meticulous worker. Nick already knows the two [BMW] sites in Munich and Hinwil and is familiar with everybody involved."
