Idolizing
Idolism like life has different ages… Some of us have fond memories of these.. Although at times having an idol may feel like the best thing in the world, it does in very rare cases leave little room for your originality to thrive.
Routine Phenomenon
We’ve been seeing it through the ages! And it’s not an uncommon phenomenon. We’ve had cricketer, heroes, national leaders whose examples we have followed. And like every other human being in this world, all of them have been unique examples to follow. Sometimes teenagers seem to find it difficult in searching their real selves, thanks to their souls being so immersed in their idols. Idolizing isn’t such a bad thing after all, its only that its been accepted in a sad state. Idols provide encouragement, in a manner that no words or no peson in particular could provide. It’s really an overdose of everything that gets into idolizing that makes the situation worse. What started as titilation and become the normal fad, while exposing flesh through what we know as "Fashionable Clothing". It is not considered indifferent when a large part of the flesh is thrown open to a million set of eyes, through the mass media.
The reason being that if J Lo is so proud of her butt, then why shouldn’t I? I think a lot of us while idolizing ourselves sub consciously place ourselves so close to the protagonist that we follow that its next to impossible if you had alienate your life from him/ her. Fantazing about a hot bod, or even fantasizing of holding a lady on your well toned body not only makes you want to become like Arnold, but also gives you the profound pleasure of persevering. Not bad, as long as it doesn’t become uncomfortably unbearable. There are a large percentage of people who believe that despite having people as your idols, you don’t really become like them, you just want to carve your own niche through the garb that they provide. Silly but true that in this sense you are actually aping him/her.
Some Research
Another strata of people I had spoken to were of the opinion that their jobs had kept them on their toes almost all the time that they had to indulge in possessing an idol as that would be the only thing that would bring them to reality. A friend of mine joined the gym only because she admired Madonna’s well toned body at an age, where women want to look like mothers of children. Their idea of a mother was still quite traditional, where they all agreed that if you are of the age then look like it. I feel a lot of this attitude is also because we all want to in some way be appreciated. And these are all tactics of getting there as it were. We have all been born feeling that we are unique souls and at any given time in life, it these Idols that make us believe that we have so far been living in a age of horror. Horror of putting on unnecessary weight. Horror of losing our husbands, and the horro of escaping through the years without getting noticed.
Idolism stems from a very natural feeling of aping. Like imitation is the best form of appreciation, I think as individuals we unconsciously form idols at a very young age. These may be indirect ones in the form of our mothers, pop stars, cricketers and later our colleagues. There have been several cases in certain Asian countries where fans have gone to their wits end in placing themselves in the shoes of their idols. It is also important that like for every intellingent and wise person in this world there is yet another who probably would be even better than him/ her, likewise, our idols have also gained popularity by looking upon certain other idols of their own. Another study of students, mostly teenagers also revealed that all idols, irrespective of their profession had three of the most simple principles in life.
These were, discipline, conviction and a hugely positive attitude that helped them get there. In our strife for survival, there are several simplistic things that we generally tend to ignore. Holding a positive attitude without grudges is one of the most difficult amongst these. Even if you were to get into that brilliant shape, we tend to forget that there are certain genetic and constitutional hurdles that we need to surpass. A good thing here is that most gyms have posters of some of the best bodies, both men and women providing further encouragement to fanatic health freaks like us! Both that apart, the crux of the matter is that unless you take Idolism in the right spirit and not stretch it beyond your sanities, it might be difficult to exist in this world filled with no dearth of examples. Think about it….. Some food for thought!
