National Football League postpones week 2 games
Due to the attack on America on Tuesday, the NFL decided, with much debate, to postpone it's Week 2 games. No news on whether the games will be made up.
The NFL will be taking the week off, just like many Americans this week.
Due to the attack on America on Tuesday. The NFL decided, with much debate, to postpone its Week 2 games. A complete about face from 1963, when Commissioner Rozelle decided to play games after President Kennedy was assassinated. No news on when, or even if, the games will be made up.
The games that are postponed are: Arizona at Washington Buffalo at Miami Cincinnati at Tennessee Dallas at Detroit Denver at Indianapolis Green Bay at N.Y. Giants New England at Carolina Philadelphia at Tampa Bay San Francisco at New Orleans Atlanta at St. Louis Jacksonville at Chicago Kansas City at Seattle N.Y. Jets at Oakland Cleveland at Pittsburgh Minnesota at Baltimore
The San Diego Chargers have a bye week on Week 2. They also may be the only team to play 16 games this season.
Many proposals are being considered. One of those is wiping out all of the Week 2 games completely and playing a 15 game schedule except for San Diego.
Another proposal is moving the games to the January 6-7, 2002 weekend, which is the current Wild Card Weekend. This would reduce the playoff field from twelve to eight teams, having only one Wild Card team instead of three like the NFL had from 1970-1977.
A third proposal is shifting bye weeks so that the games can be played later in the season.
Basically, the decision was made in the best interests of the country. The NFL felt it needed to take a back seat due to what happened. The players didn't have the heart to play, the teams didn't want to travel, and everyone feared for their lives if they played on Sunday and Monday.
A majority have agreed with the postponement decision, while some were skeptical and felt that they should play and have some sort of breakaway from the tragedy that happened on Tuesday. The consensus was that it was the right thing to do.
The NFL will resume on September 25th, hopefully, with the same intensity and competitiveness that they played with on September 9th and 10th. That is hard to say. The events that happened on Tuesday may have effected how we look at sports and everything else for awhile.
