The chief anaesthetist at a Spanish hospital went on trial yesterday accused of homicide after allegedly infecting 276 patients with Hepatitis C by injecting them with needles that he had used to inject himself with drugs.

Three of Juan Maeso's patients died of the disease. Seventeen of his alleged victims from the Hospital de la Fe in Valencia are children.

Dr Maeso, who tested positive for Hepatitis C in 1998, faces up to 24 years in jail. Yesterday he denied being addicted to opiates or sharing needles with patients. His alleged victims are claiming €28m (£19m) damages.
