USA teams post Fifth & Ninth at FIVB U-18 World Championships
The United States posted a fifth and ninth on Saturday in Termoli, Italy, at the third annual FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships for men and women players under 18 years old.
Cynthia Barboza (Long Beach, Calif.) and Stephanie Barry (Long Beach, Calif.) split a pair of matches Saturday to net a fifth in the women's competition while Joseph Dykstra (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla.) were ninth in the men's championships.
Seeded fourth in the women's competition on Rio Vivo Beach, Barboza and Barry posted a 21-13 and 22-20 win in 37 minutes over seventh-seeded Olega Bukreeva and Viktoria Petrova of Russia in their first match Saturday. Marleen Van Iersel and Margo Wiltens of the Netherlands ousted the young Californians 21-9 and 21-17 in a 29-minute semi-final qualifying match.
The eighth-seeded Dykstra (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla.) dropped a 21-15, 23-25 and 15-10 in 53 minutes to 10th-seeded Reid Hall/Adam Podstawka of Canada in the Round of 16. The Canadians advanced to the "final four" with a 21-17 and 21-15 win over fourth-seeded Mario Ferrera and Luis Troncoso Martinez of Spain.
Both teams were "disappointed" in their finishes, but "glad to be competing," said Barry. "This was a wonderful experience for all the Americans and the members of our families travelling with us. The organization was great. The best part was meeting, visiting and playing the international teams."
Wiltens and Van Iersel will play Sunday's first women's semi-final match against 23rd-seeded Katarzyna Urban and Joanna Wiatr of Poland. Sunday's second "final four" match will have second-seeded Barbara Figueiredo and Carolina Solberg Salgado of Brazil facing third-seeded Florentina Büttner and Julia Sude of Germany.
Zbigniew Bartman and Michal Kubiak of Poland play Hall and Podstawka in Sunday's first men's semi-final followed by the match between Ingars Ivanovs and Janis Smedins of Latvia and Arunas Kirsnys and Arvydas Miseikis of Lithuania.
While Barboza, Barry and Dykstra return to Southern California, Van Zwieten remains on the FIVB Beach Volleyball circuit as he teams next week with brother Steve at the FIVB U-21 World Championships. Presented by SWATCH, the 2004 FIVB U-18 World Championships will be played on Porto Santo Island, Portugal's Medeira Archipelago.
