Top 25 football rankings -- Week three

There were a few upsets that changed the loop of this Top 25 high school football poll.
This week's top ten teams were spared the madness that took place below them in the Top 25. Six teams dropped out of this week's poll, four of them due to losses. There was also a lot of other movement within the lower portion of the Top 25.

The highest debut is from Dorman out of Spartanburg, SC. The Cavaliers debut at number 15 after knocking off its second ranked opponent of the season (their first win was against preseason No. 25 Lexington).

Also, debuting this week are Jamestown HS out of Jamestown, NY, Hoover High in Alabama, Lakeland High in Florida, Creighton Prep out of Omaha, NE and Chatfield High out of Littleton, CO.

Quite a few stellar games are on the docket this week. A top ten matchup pits Evangel Christian at Lufkin, which looks to be a game that will rival the De La Salle-Poly matchup coming in the first weekend of October. Another matchup of ranked teams include 11th-ranked St. Ignatius hosting Washington High of Massillon, currently ranked 20th. Jenks, ranked fourth, will travel to Tulsa to play Union High at the University of Tulsa, which has proven to be a minefield for Jenks in past seasons.

In other top matchups, DeMatha Catholic out of Maryland will travel to play formerly ranked Rockhurst out of Kansas City. A win for DeMatha on the road could propel them into the Top 25. Number three Tallahassee Lincoln will travel to Valdosta, GA to play against the all-time winningest high school football program.

T1. De La Salle, Concord, CA (1-0) Last Week: T1 Result: So much for the highly anticipated opener for the Spartans. Clovis Buchanan proved to be no match as De La Salle extended their winning streak to a national-record 114 games with a 56-14 thrashing. Elijah Bradley, in his first game as a starter, ran for 127 yards on only eight carries, scoring once. He also ran back an interception 61 yards for another score. The Spartans led 49-0 early in the third quarter before substituting freely the remainder of the contest. The Spartans are off this week before playing a game against regionally ranked Mater Dei of Santa Ana.

T1. Poly, Long Beach, CA (1-0) Last Week: T1 Result: It was supposed to be a relatively easy win and the Jackrabbits delivered, knocking off Westchester of Los Angeles 37-0. Hershel Dennis ran for 226 yards and two scores while Westchester was held to 50 yards of total offense. The scoring was opened on the first play of the game as Brandon Brooks hit Derrick Jones for a tone-setting 63-yard pass completion and touchdown.

3. Lincoln, Tallahassee, FL (2-0) Last Week: 3 Result: Knocked off cross-town Godby 44-21 in a game that was closer than the score indicates. The Trojans held a precarious 24-14 lead at the half before breaking out in the second half. Gavin Dickey hit on 15 out of 27 for 239 yards. Lincoln is one of the many teams with tough matchups this week, traveling to Valdosta.

4. Jenks, Jenks, OK (2-0) Last Week: 4 Result: Tuned up for this week's matchup against archrival Union with a relatively easy 34-3 win over Ft. Smith (AR) Northside. Northside had just 13 yards of total offense in the first three quarters, despite defensive end Bryan Pickryl's absence. Pickryl will also likely miss the Union game this weekend with mononucleosis. Aaron Brewer ran for 102 yards and three scores on 18 carries.

5. Lufkin, Lufkin, TX (1-0) Last Week: 5 Result: Struggled to a 17-7 win over Beaumont Central, as Terry Williams had 58 yards rushing and one touchdown, a one-yard run that iced the game late. This week will be more difficult as the high-flying attack of Evangel Christian comes to town. Fortunately for Lufkin, this one is at home.

6. West Monroe, West Monroe, LA (2-0) Last Week: 6 Result: Crushed an out-manned Westlake of Lake Charles squad 51-2. West Monroe substituted liberally throughout the game, and the biggest highlight was a 96-yard interception return from Brandon Barnes for a touchdown.

7. Glades Central, Belle Glades, FL (2-0) Last Week: 7 Result: Curtis Holley kept his record spotless in his third year as a starter (32-0 in that span) as he threw for 152 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-0 win over John I. Leonard. The Raiders scored on their first three possessions of the game.

8. Woodland Hills, Pittsburgh, PA (2-0) Last Week: 8 Result: The Wolverines posted their second consecutive shutout, a 47-0 whitewashing of Gateway. Star running back Kareem Dutrielle ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on only four carries.

9. Evangel Christian, Shreveport, LA (2-0) Last Week: 9 Result: John David Booty threw for 340 yards on 17-for-20 passing, including four touchdowns as Evangel rolled over Monroe Ouachita 40-0. Thomas Bachman was the recipient of six of Booty's throws for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

10. Independence, Charlotte, NC (2-0) Last Week: 10 Result: Independence had the week off, giving them extra time to prepare for defending Class 4A state champion Butler in what could be a very difficult road test for the Patriots.

11. St. Ignatius, Cleveland, OH (3-0) Last Week: 11 Result: Jumped out to a 38-14 halftime lead before disposing of Westerville North 45-26. John van der Oord ran for 235 yards on 25 carries, finding the end zone three touchdowns. Nate Szep also threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns. The Wildcats host Massillon Washington in what may be the top game in Ohio this season.

12. Harrison, Farmington Hills, MI (3-0) Last Week: 16 Result: Used a total team effort to defeat Walled Lake Western 44-0. Drew Stanton clicked on 10-of-11 passing for 193 yards. Junior running backs Marcus Woods had three rushing touchdowns included in his 101-yard effort (on just seven carries). The defense also forced three fumbles. Undefeated Plymouth Canton is on the agenda for the Hawks this week.

13. Westlake, Austin, TX (2-0) Last Week: 13 Result: Scott Belew ran for 141 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns as Westlake beat Belton 36-6. Jason Floyd added two interceptions on the defensive side of the ball.

14. Colerain, Cincinnati, OH (2-0) Last Week: 15 Result: Notched a shutout of Lakota East in a game stopped at halftime and declared completed with a 38-0 score after a lightning storm hit the greater Cincinnati area.

15. Dorman, Spartanburg, SC (3-0) Last Week: Not ranked, also was not a team to watch. Result: Dorman proved that they are for real and that their opening win over Lexington was not a fluke. The Cavaliers traveled to Greenwood and came out with a heart-stopping 27-21 win over the formerly 14th-ranked team. Andrew Hewitt threw for 308 yards on 19-for-26 passing.

16. Mt. Carmel, Chicago, IL (3-0) Last Week: 17 Result: Did not suffer a letdown after its big victory over Joliet Catholic as they rolled over Chicago St. Rita 41-14. Two Caravan runners posted over 100 yards on the ground, Greg Owens (135 yards) and Tom Brown (147 yards).

17. Parkview, Lilburn, GA (2-0) Last Week: 12 Result: Just barely held off Norcross 21-19 in a very sloppy game. The key play was a fumble recovery midway through the fourth quarter stopping what would have been a go-ahead score for Norcross. Dustin Wade threw for 282 yards for the Panthers.

18. Ben Davis, Indianapolis, IN (4-0) Last Week: 19 Result: The defense held Terre Haute South to just 84 yards of total offense in a 53-0 victory. Ben Davis and Garrett Phillips each rushed for two touchdowns and also both threw for one score. Charles Anthony had 102 yards on seven rushes.

19. Jamestown, Jamestown, NY (1-0) Last Week: Team to Watch Result: Opened defense of their New York state championship with a 42-12 victory over Kenmore West. Josh Singletary ran for 142 yards on 18 carries, including one score. The Red Raiders led this one 28-6 at the half before cruising.

20. Washington, Massilon, OH (3-0) Last Week: 25 Result: Justin Zwick threw for three touchdowns in a 59-0 victory over Akron Garfield. The game was a tune-up for this week's matchup in Cleveland against St. Ignatius.

21. Lakeland, Lakeland, FL (2-0) Last Week: Team to Watch Result: Lakeland has not allowed a touchdown in either of its first two games this year. This week's victory was a 40-0 win over Auburndale.

22. Hoover, Hoover, AL (2-0) Last Week: Team to Watch Result: Crushed Pelham, who was ranked ninth in Alabama, 52-10. Returns to the top 25 after falling out of the poll last week.

23. Elizabeth, Elizabeth, NJ (1-0) Last Week: 24 Result: Easily disposed of Kearny 46-18 as Ibrahim Halsey had 225 all-purpose yards and three scores (two rushing, one receiving).
