Seeded fourth in the women's competition, Cynthia Barboza (Long Beach, Calif.) and Stephanie Barry (Long Beach, Calif.) posted Pool D wins over teams from Russia and Latvia to almost guarantee them a top spot in the 16-team single-elimination bracket.
Barboza and Barry can win Pool D with a win over ninth-seeded Jillian McLeod and Alice Rohkamper of Australia. The top two teams from each pool advance to Saturday's Round of 16 along with the four-best third-place finishes in each group.
Eighth-seeded Joseph Dykstra (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla.) scored a 21-11 and 21-16 victory over Pavlos Kouzounis and Charlampos Papadopoulos of Greece to join a team from Poland as the unbeaten men's teams in Pool E.
Dykstra and Van Zwieten play 20th-seeded Grzegorz Fijalek and Grzegorz Pajak of Poland and fifth-seeded Sam Boehm and Shaun Howard of Australia in their final two pool matches Friday. Fijalek and Pajak opened with a 21-14 and 21-16 over the Aussies.
Following Saturday's two rounds of play, the "final four" teams will advance to Sunday's semifinals and medal matches.
