Hurricane Katrina ripped through Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana earlier this week leaving thousands upon thousands of people homeless or worse. Stars are uniting for benefit concerts to help aid the victims of this terrible storm. It was announced that NBC is airing its event this Friday at 8 p.m. on NBC, CNBC, and MSNBC. The concert, A Concert for Hurricane Relief, will be broadcast live from New York studios in Rockefeller Plaza on the East Coast and will air on tape delay on the West Coast. New Orleans natives Harry Connick Jr., Wynton Marsalis, and Tim McGraw are among the artists that are set to perform and Matt Lauer will emcee the event. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
MTV, VH1, and CMT have announced that they will host a multi-artist, multi-city concert special that will air on all three networks on September 10 that will benefit the American Red Cross. Performers will include such talents as Usher, Dave Matthews Band, Gretchen Wilson, Ludacris, and John Mellencamp. BET is teaming with the American Red Cross and the National Urban League for a September 9 benefit concert. The details of which will be unveiled during a press conference this week with Marsalis, Russell Simmons, and Jay-Z.
New Orleans natives Master P and his son Romeo have formed a charity, Team Rescue, and are planning a "Save Our Hood" concert and album. Said Master P, "We are contributing our own money toward items such as food, clothes, and shoes, and we are also reaching out to corporations for donations. TeamRescue.com is the website he has set up to receive donations. Singer McGraw said, "I am heartbroken by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in my home state. Like so many Americans I am watching the news reports with great sadness. But it’s at times like these that each of us must work together to provide lifesaving aid to those in terrible need."
