Rowing: Seven Shine in Full House for Britain
Britain's success at the world rowing championships continued with the remaining seven boats seeking qualification all seizing their last opportunity.
The remaining seven boats in the British team seeking qualification seized eagerly on their last chance yesterday in the world championships here in Japan. Four of them won their repechage races outright and the other three fought tooth and nail to take the last slots.
It means an unprecedented full house so far for Britain's 18 crews, with five through to the weekend finals, 11 in the semi-finals over the next two days and the two crews with disability starting tomorrow.
The men's and women's eights both raised their game and Colin Smith, the diminutive former Oxford stroke, beat an Australian and a Latvian in the last 20 strokes of the heavyweight single sculls.
Also through are the women's double scullers Elise Laverick and Debbie Flood and the women's lightweight double and quad scullers, who set a world-best 6min 19.86sec. In contrast the men's lightweight double took the last qualifying spot and are unlikely to go further.
