Mariah Carey's Meltdown
Mariah Carey's recent breakdown and admission to a mental health and rehabilitation center resulted in her movie premier postponement.
The much anticipated and semi-autobiographical film debut of Mariah Carey is going to be put on hold for a few weeks in the hopes that the sultry diva will be fit to perform the requisite media appearances that typically precede a big opening. The film, 'Glitter', tells the story of the struggles of a young singer and entertainer during her rise to stardom, including her romantic and professional involvement with a bad boy DJ along the way. Insiders are saying that the bad boy DJ is a representation of Tommy Mottola, Carey's ex-husband and current head honcho at Sony Music.
Mariah is currently undergoing treatment at Silver Hill, an exclusive Connecticut hospital specializing in mental illness and addiction, following a violent outburst at a TriBeCa hotel last week that prompted her mother, Patricia, to call 911. Those close to the superstar have cited several possibilities for the breakdown, including the stresses of filming her movie, producing a new album, and some romantic problems that she has been facing.
Regardless of the reason, the breakdown has pushed back the opening of 'Glitter' and has brought Mariah even more of the spotlight that probably contributed to her meltdown. Although it's not uncommon for superstars to break down mentally and emotionally as a result of the tremendous scrutiny that they endure, it seemed that things were moving along fairly well for Mariah. Sales of her latest single, 'Loverboy', were weaker than expected, but the opening of the movie would have probably resulted in a surge in sales on that front as well. At this point, those around her can only wait and hope that she emerges from this episode in a condition to move forward, although I would expect her to drastically reduce her professional commitments if and when she returns.
