Lee Quits England
Soccer: Bolton assistant manager Sammy Lee has turned down the offer of a full-time coaching role with England's under-21 team.
Sammy Lee has joined Alan Shearer in opting out of Steve McClaren's new England set-up, choosing instead to concentrate on his work as Sam Allardyce's assistant at Bolton.
McClaren had offered Lee a full-time role coaching England's Under-21 team alongside part-time boss Peter Taylor, but Lee felt it was time to concentrate on his work at Bolton. He had previously worked as a part-time assistant coach for the senior England team under Sven Goran-Eriksson.
"After a number of days deliberating my future, and the fact that I am very flattered to be considered for the full-time post, I would like to show my total commitment to Bolton by declining the offer," said Lee.
"Over the past decade I have enjoyed my time at the FA immensely. It has been a great honour to be involved with such a dynamic organisation and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players, both at senior level and Under-21s, who I have had the pleasure working with over the past few years. Finally, I would like to wish Steve McClaren and his team every success in the years ahead in what will be an exciting era for the England team."
Shearer decided last week to dedicate himself to BBC punditry rather than international dug-outs.
