Fantasy Football Players and Consistency
Fantasy Football Rankings: The impact of fantasy football league specific scoring systems on fantasy football player stats.
Consistent performance is the mark of greatness. Players that can perform at a high level day in and day out earn the respect of their peers and fans alike.
That is not to say that inconsistent performance can't also lead to greatness. In that case, I always think of Reggie Jackson. The only thing Reggie did consistently was strike out. When the chips were down, or his team needed a homer to win it however, Reggie delivered. It happened so much that he earned the nickname Mr. October. From a fantasy perspective - October would probably have been the only month you wanted to start him.
In fantasy football you also want a more consistent performance. You need to know that you can count on your starters to deliver on game day, week after week. Unfortunately, consistency alone cannot tell you the whole story. However, it is relatively easy to incorporate a player's consistency into the mix of factors that determine a fantasy football player's true value.
Consistency works best when used with a suite of stats that include specifics like projected scoring, scoring range, average points per game, and player participation trends. Looking at a full-range of statistics allows you to quickly judge who should start and who should sit during the regular season.
From a draft perspective, having a fantasy football ranking of each player that takes all of those statistics into account - and (pay special attention here), filters them through your league's specific scoring system - can make the difference between starting the year strong or playing catch-up all season.
There are software programs available that allow you to apply at least some of your league's scoring system to your projections - or you can join a site like StatLeader.com that will rank players and offer recommendations for you each week.
The truth is: The only "stand alone" statistic in Fantasy Football is the win/loss column.
