Marie Osmond Denies Suicide Attempt

It was reported that Osmond, 46, had attempted suicide and was hospitalized. Amy Hawkes, Osmond’s rep, has denied the rumors claiming that Osmond had a bad reaction to medication. Said Hawkes, "She basically had an adverse reaction to some medications she was taking and blacked out." Osmond was taken to Timpanogos Regional Medical Center in Orem, Utah last week where she spent a few days. No word on what medication Osmond was taking or for what ailment .

The National Enquirer ran a story last week claiming that Osmond had attempted suicide and was hospitalized to get some mental help. It was speculated that maybe the stress over her daughter’s "un-Mormon-like" behavior took its toll on Osmond. It was reported that her teen-age daughters posted details of drug and alcohol consumption and other lewd acts of behavior on their MySpace pages prompting Osmond to release a statement on behalf of her family. As for the alleged suicide attempt, Osmond’s manager, Karl Engemann, said, "We deal with these tabloids all the time. You get tired of responding. It’s like punching Jell-O." According to her rep, Osmond is "doing fine" and is "vacationing with her family right now."

Osmond has always been very open about her emotional state. She detailed her struggle with post-partum depression following the birth of her third child, Matthew, in a 2001 book titled Behind the Smile: My Journey out of Postpartum Depression. She spoke out about post-partum depression again last year after Tom Cruise publicly trashed former friend Brooke Shields for using anti-depressants to battle post-partum depression after the birth of her daughter, Rowan. Osmond came to Shields defense and said in an interview, "When Tom becomes a woman and has a baby and has postpartum, then he can become an expert."
