Formula One: Fia Brings Turks to Book

Motor sport's governing body has summoned organisers of the Turkish grand prix to discuss the future of the sport in the country.
Motor sport's governing body, the FIA, has summoned the organisers of last Sunday's Turkish grand prix, together with representatives of the country's motor sporting authority, before the world council in Paris on September 19 to discuss the future of the sport in their country.

They will be charged with a breach of FIA statutes after the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, pictured, was allowed to present the winner's trophy to the Ferrari driver Felipe Massa in Istanbul. The FIA could cancel next year's Turkish grand prix after what was seen as a deliberate breach of the protocol requiring trophies to be handed out by dignitaries of the host nation.

This year's round of the world touring car championship on September 24 and the world rally championship qualifying event scheduled for mid-October are also under threat. Max Mosley, the FIA president, is understood to be furious and will be reminding the Turkish organisers of the governing body's statute that it "shall refrain from manifesting racial, political or religious discrimination in the course of its activities and from taking any action in this respect".
