Golf: Wie to Turn Pro

Talented schoolgirl Michelle Wie is expected to turn professional before her 16th birthday and sign with the William Morris Agency, creator of superstars.
If it is good enough for Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart, then it must be good enough for the teenager who is expected to transform the world of golf over the next decade.

Michelle Wie, the talented Hawaiian schoolgirl who has captured the headlines, if not many tangible successes, over the last two years with her attempts to play with the world's best male players, is expected to turn professional in time for her 16th birthday in October.

When she does, it appears she will be represented by one of Hollywood's biggest talent agencies.

Reports from Los Angeles yesterday suggested that Wie will sign on with William Morris Agency, which made its name representing some of the most famous actors. The company's determination to sign Wie is illustrated by its offer to cut its commission from any deal she signs to zero.

Kent's Karen Stupples clinched the final captain's wild-card selection and will make her Solheim Cup debut when Europe defends the title at Crooked Stick in Indiana in two weeks' time.

The Scot Catriona Matthew was another of Catrin Nilsmark's five picks, while the English pair Laura Davies and Trish Johnson made it from the seven automatic selections from the rankings.
