Today I alternated between bagging groceries and working the cash register. I enjoy bagging but don't enjoy being a cashier. There are too many problems when you work the cash register.
Produce items have PLC/PLU codes. These are universal numbers that identify these products. All supermarkets use these numbers. The numbers are determined by the produce industry.
A watermelon wedge's code is 4348. I believe a plum is 4440. Some of these items are priced by weight, others are priced by individual unit. I still forget which is which and slow down the checkout line.
Scanners are not as accurate as they should be. Many items take a few swipes before they register. Items in plastic bags, for example, potato chips can be a problem because the bag gets wrinkled. Ice cream cartons also present a problem. You have to remove the frost or condensation from the bar code.
My trainer is a bright 20 year old male who works to earn money for college. He has been working in this industry for 6 years. He has memorized all of the PLC/PLU codes. I expect to see him on Jeopardy some day.
His aspiration in life is to work in the customer service industry or be a nurse. He wants to help others. He is also pro-union, something you don't see that often in a young person.
Good news! The donut/coffee shop opens Tuesday, August 31st. I look forward to this. I know I will enjoy serving coffee and joking with the customers.
