" Some people wait a lifetime

For a moment like this

Some people search forever

For that one special kiss

Oh I can't believe it's happening to me

Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this.!"

Yes, it is true. You do wait a lifetime for a moment like this. It’s every little girl’s dream day. Long, lonely nights have been spent on visualizing the perfect wedding. But, it is not as simple as it sounds or appears. The problem with getting the best is that you have an endless list of options, from which you need to select and that…believe me, is chaotic.

Let’s start at the beginning. A bride would want to look stunning on her special day… so the task begins. The first hurdle is the dress.

India, being a country of plenty also has plenty of options to choose from. Various communities prefer different wedding attire but saaree or lehenga are the two most popular of the lot. Now, if you thought the decision has been made then do browse through the list of tricky questions below:

a) Color: Code red? Yes, red does happen to be favorite option for the bridal wear. Well, my grandmother would have never even thought of getting married in anything other than red but my mother went for a golden (lehenga) and a red (bodice with golden bead work) combination and I had (ahem!!) donned a peacock blue saree with lots of embroidery and a multi colored choli.

Well, the verdict is…. go for a color which suits your complexion and is acceptable within the community for e.g. Black is considered inauspicious by some. Red is still the popular choice and today you get a lot of hues and materials with various shades of red to pick up from.
b) Embroidery: Depending upon the fabric one can also select the embroidery style. There is Zardosi, mukti etc. But, again befitting the occasion a little gliter and glamour does no harm.

Opt for a contrast color in embroidery from the base fabric. Do avoid self embroidery as this would downplay the heavy work and this is not one of the days where you would like to be anything less than the very centre of all the attention.

c) Designer: Nowadays, there is a simple way out to this entire dilemma. Pick up your local Directory and dial D for a Designer for help and do ensure to do this much in advance to your D - day. A designer, (ahem.. a well qualified one and not the refined version of your local tailor) would incorporate the essence of your personality and would eventually enhance the entire look. BIG WORDS….Don’t go for them. A designer, would definitely help you decide but remember that the ultimate choice is yours. Do not pick up something in which you are not comfortable and simply because the D is saying that it happens to be the most ‘in -thing’ this season.

d ) Budget: I had to come to this. Believe me, I would have definitely liked to skip this bit but ethically I should have put this right at the beginning of the list. Your entire choice is dependent on this and obviously the sane mind would advice you to avoid going overboard for a piece of attire which you would perhaps wear just once in your entire life. But, then yes.. .. it is definitely a one -time event in your entire life!! Devil’s advocate!
So, decide! Hmmm , back to square one.

Logically, you should try blending the two…budget versus desire. For eg you can get a heavily embroidered choli and dupatta which you can later wear at simple occasions teamed with simpler sarees or suits. This would definitely lessen your guilt and would also be a little easy on your pockets.

e) Trends: Last but definitely not the least….. the in-thing. What’s in and what’s out this season. Well, for starters colors are definitely in. The subdued elegance of the 60’s is back courtesy to the latest hit Parineeta. The newcomer Vidya Balan has definitely made a mark for herself and redefined the trends. Well, even the Rani look from Paheli is a craze…..go for lots of jewelry and lots of colors.

Yeah, here go the famous last words. Notwithstanding, the trend or the numerous inputs by your relatives and friends and the designer (yeah, also the designer!) pick up an outfit in which you are comfortable. Because, true beauty would come from, the glow within and that cannot be bought through expensive outfits or jewelry. It should reflect in your eyes, it should shine through the confidence when you feel, knowing that you are the luckiest and the happiest person.
