Dempsey Makes Bronze His

Great Britain's Nick Dempsey snatched bronze in the men's mistral (windsurfing) today after a sensational victory in the 11th and final race of the competition.

The 24-year-old began the day in fourth place, 10 points behind Greece's 1996 champion Nikolaos Kaklamanakis in third and 15 points behind overnight leader Ricardo Santos.

His chance of a medal seemed remote, but he led from the start, working incredibly hard in light winds to win the race and then watched anxiously as the rest of the fleet came home.

When Brazilian Santos crawled home in 17th place, Dempsey was confirmed as the bronze medal winner by one point. Israel's Gal Fridman finished second in the race to take the Olympic title with Kaklamanakis, who lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony, in silver.
