Formula One: Fia Ruling Puts a Damper on Alonso's Title Hopes

Fernando Alonso's world championship aspirations have been hit by an unfavourable FIA court of appeal decision.
Fernando Alonso and the Renault formula one team suffered what could be a major setback to their world championship ambitions yesterday when the FIA court of appeal ruled that the mass damper incorporated into the front and rear suspension of their cars is an illegal aerodynamic device.

As a result, the Renaults of Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella will no longer be able to use the dampers, a penalty which they believe could cost them as much as 0.3sec a lap with five races of the season left. This could hand a decisive performance advantage to Ferrari's Michael Schumacher who trails Alonso by 10 points going into Sunday's Turkish grand prix at Istanbul.
