Formula One: Renault Await Decision in Car Dampers Row
Fernando Alonso's world championship bid could be hit by a possible penalty if the FIA decide Renault's mass dampers are illegal.
Fernando Alonso and the Renault formula one team face a hearing at the FIA court of appeal today which could affect their world championship chances over the five races remaining this season. The issue surrounds the legality of the so-called "mass dampers" fitted to their cars' chassis which were declared legal by the stewards at last month's German grand prix, contradicting the view of the FIA. As a result today's hearing will see the sport's governing body challenge the ruling of its own officials. Renault claim that if the dampers are banned it will handicap their cars' performance by around 0.3sec a lap, handing their closest championship pursuers Ferrari an advantage.
