Sorry George, no pie for you
If only I were psychic and could hear what George Steinbrenner was thinking after Cliff Floyd was traded to the Boston Red Sox. He's probably baffled since every trading deadline usually involves the Yankees getting the best. Yet, this time, it's the Red Sox, and, of course, Steinbrenner yells foul.
Can you hear it?
Off in the distance.. WAH! WAH!
Could it be?
Yes, it's the "wambulance," this time driven by New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. If only I were psychic and could hear what he was thinking after Cliff Floyd was traded to the Boston Red Sox. I can only imagine.
How could someone else trade for a great player? How could someone possibly trade a great player to the Red Sox and not my Yankees!?
He's probably baffled and confused since every trading deadline usually involves the Yankees grabbing the best players, and every off season involves the Yankees signing the biggest free agents.
Yet, this time, it's the Red Sox, and, of course, Steinbrenner yells foul. "If Major League Baseball owns Montreal and they get [Floyd] and [three] weeks later they trade him to our biggest competitor, that's hard to believe," Steinbrenner told The Post on July 31. "What's that say?" What does that say George?
Well that says that someone finally put their foot down and said no I'm not trading one of my best players to the Yankees. Me, personally, could never see why any team would trade with the Yankees anyway. This season they struck first by grabbing Raul Mondesi, costing them petty pocket change, and grabbed Jeff Weaver, or who now should be called "Way-back Weaver." If Steinbrenner needs anything to be suspicious about, how about he take a look at the Mondesi deal he made.
In that deal, all the Yankees gave up was minor league pitcher Scott Wiggins. Wiggins, a relief pitcher, has nothing special about him and is about equal to any minor league relief pitcher out there.
What Georgie possibly didn't know was that the Red Sox gave up their best pitching prospect, Seung Song, who is a regular minor league all-star and was said to be a potential No. 2 starter by ESPN, to get Floyd. I find it funny, after many dead line deals that included players of the likes of Rolando Arrojo, Ugueth Urbina, Mike Lansing, and even Greg Swindell, the Red Sox at last do it and grab that major impact player.
But, instead of an "Oh shucks the Red Sox got us, lets go eat some cake," it's This can't be, it has to be a conspiracy to beat my Yankees, lets go eat some cake by Steinbrenner.
I'm sorry George, but maybe you're not taking your medication. The Red Sox made some great deals, fair and square. So next time your in line at your favorite fast food restaurant, take a minute and think about how the Yankees are getting old and baseball wants a new team to prevail, like the Arizona Diamondbacks did last year. Sorry Georgie this time, no pie for you.
