Boxing: Champs corner
A good fight and other musings highlight this week's edition of Champs corner...
Hello fight fans!!!
It's really been hot on the left coast, and as I got ready to watch the Mark Johnson-Fernando Montiel bout I wasn't sure what we would be treated to.
After a slow start and everything was said and done, not a bad fight at all. A Roy Jones sighting? No. Ole Roy is still hiding from legit opposition. Word is he wants to bulk up Derrick Gainer and drop him with a body shot!
It seemed for about the first half of the fight, it was boring. Total punches thrown were less than I've seen at my local pub. Then Montiel came on, but I thought he lost the last rd. I had Johnson controlling the first half of the fight. Entertaining fight. I never really thought much of Fernando. I think Mark is way too old. So when all is said and done, I think Montiel will still come out ahead in the long run.
Didn't think much of the undercard as Juan Manuel Marquez beat Marcos Licona. Who? Marquez should have taken this guy out earlier. He is another one of these guys who like Ronald Winky Wright and Chris Byrd think they are entitled to something, and that EVERYONE is ducking them. Wake up. Juan's claim to fame was saying how Prince Hamed ducked him for years. However when Hamed decided to fight him, he mysteriously got "hurt." Go figure.
Champ Flurries: How can anyone blow $300 million? Ask Mike Tyson. I have always said it would end badly for the ex-champ. I will stand by that statement...I thought it was amusing when they showed Gatti and Ward with their ladies and Gainer was by himself. Where was ole Roy?... Fres Oquendo-Chris Byrd? Get me some Sominex... H.Rahman-Vitali Klitschko? Why would the rock risk everything when he is already ranked... Who is Fabio Moli? That's the other Klits opponent. Gimme a break. I have heard of "soft" touches but this is ridiculous... Kostya Tszyu-Vivian Harris? Great. I'm getting tired of Kostya well, basically doing nothing. Looking forward to the Laila Ali-Christy Martin fight. Don't know why. I wish Andrew Golota would have stayed under his rock. Bernard Hopkins vs. William Joppy (with Hasim Rahman and Ricardo Mayorga on the undercard)? I'm all for it. I would love to see Joppy beat Hops... Can Holyfield shut up already? You didn't beat Lennox Lewis in EITHER fight. Sounds like bitter apples to me... Dariusz Michalczewski to eclipse Rocky Marciano? Please. Don't put that Euro's name in the same page, let alone same sentence as the great one. Like Acelino Freitas, this guy fights corpses... Welcome back Joe Hipp!
That's it fight fans! Keep your hands up and keep punching for the stars! And if that was Lennox Lewis's last fight, I am proud to have been at ringside to witness the greatest fighter of his era. Sorry to hear about the Frenchies... well, not really.
