Jason Giambi for Tino Martinez? Say it isn't so!
At the end of the baseball season, the Yankees may just break up that "old gang of mine." Will Jason Giambi fit into the mix or not?
Don't get me wrong, I like, no, I LOVE Jason Giambi.
He's young, he's scrappy, he's an exciting player, and, oh yeah, he was last year's American League MVP. He's a loose dude in a cool mood. Perfect for the new breed of Oakland A's. Definitely perfect for a No-Cal guy. (No-Cal is short for Northern California in case you didn't know.)
But, as a New York Yankee? For Tino Martinez?! Let's back up the World Series car one New York minute!
It's not going to happen. No, let me make this perfectly clear. This life long New York Yankee fan (37 years proudly and counting) says -- IT BETTER NOT HAPPEN!
Both Giambi and Martinez will be free agents next year, and even though JG's batting average is a little better than Tino's, who's got the rings? It isn't Jason.
If "The Boss" is smart, and sometimes I really wonder about Mr. Steinbrenner, he'll let his baseball people handle this mess.
Yankee fans don't want to see Tino go. He's a part of us -- a New York Yankee.
Maybe Giambi would look good in pinstripes -- I think they said the same thing about Sammy Sosa this time last year, though he's still in Chitown the last time I checked -- but sorry, I don't see Giambi in a Yankee uniform.
Giambi has said all the right things in his interviews of how he'd like to be a Yankee -- the winning tradition, Yankee Stadium tradition, yada, yada, yada.
Sorry Jason, all that lobbying isn't going to fly with us Yankee fans. (The real ones, not the front runners who just got on the bandwagon when Derek Jeter came along.) I thought every team wanted to win, yeah, even players on the Expos and Devil Rays want to win.
Memo to Mr. Steinbrenner -- the New York Yankee machine isn't broke. Don't try to fix it. Stop the madness, let Giambi stay where he is helping the A's. He might always beat the Yankees with his massive homeruns, but we'll keep Tino and his mini homeruns, and yeah, the World Series rings that he's gotten with the Yankees, anytime.
Tino is, and always will be, a New York Yankee.
