US Pga: Love Hopes to Conquer
Golf: While everyone was watching Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III took the lead with at seven-under par after ten holes.
The American Ryder Cup stalwart Davis Love responded last night to rumours that Tom Lehman will overlook him when he selects his captain's picks on Sunday by covering the opening 10 holes at Medinah in seven under par to take an early lead in the first round of the PGA championship.
Love will need to win the tournament to take his place in the team and on the evidence of his early effort it appeared he had an even chance of achieving that ambition.
Five birdies and one eagle gave him a one-shot lead over his compatriot Lucas Glover and a four-shot lead over Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, who were paired together. Both shot 69 earlier in the day to stay in contention. "We both played okay, although we both had chances to shoot lower scores," said Mickelson.
Among the European starters, Kenny Ferrie made an early appearance on the leaderboard, getting to three under par at one stage before dropping back to finish with a two-under round of 70.
Luke Donald holed a bunker shot for birdie on the par-three 17th on his way to a four-under 68. " I'm very close to playing well," said Donald, who was dressed all in black as a tribute to Heather Clarke, the wife of Darren Clarke who died last weekend.
