Los Angeles district attorney Ed Green announced Thursday that Osment was being charged with a number of misdemeanors. He was charged with driving under the influence; driving while having a .08 percent or higher blood alcohol content with the special allegation of having a .15 percent or higher blood alcohol content; possession of marijuana while driving; and driving with a .05 percent blood alcohol content while under the age of 21.
On July 20, 18-year old Osment crashed his 1995 Saturn at approximately 1 a.m. in Los Angeles. It was reported that he lost control of his car and slammed into a brick mailbox. Osment suffered a broken rib and a hurt shoulder as a result of the crash, but was expected to make a speedy and full recovery. At the time of the accident, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Greg Sisneros was asked if a blood alcohol test was administered. He said, "I’m sure blood samples were taken, but I don’t have a comment on that."
Osment is set to be arraigned on September 19 in Glendale Superior Court and is expected to surrender voluntarily for booking. The D.A.’s office is seeking bail to be set at $15,000. Osment faces up to six-months in jail if he is convicted. Osment has pretty much fallen by the wayside since being nominated for an Academy Award for his role in M. Night Shyamalan’s hit 1999 movie The Sixth Sense. He made a few other movies that didn’t seem to generate as much media attention as his turn as the boy who sees dead people. Osment has lent his voice to a number of animated feature films including The Jungle Book 2. He is set to play a high school journalist in the movie Home of the Giants.
