Boxing: Witter's Title-fight Wait is Over
Bradford fighter Junior Witter will finally get a shot at the WBC crown now that Floyd Mayweather has moved up a division.
Junior Witter's six-year wait for a world title shot is over. It was announced last night that the Bradford fighter would meet the American DeMarcus Corley at Alexandra Palace in north London on September 15 for the WBC crown that was made vacant when Floyd Mayweather elected to move up to the welterweight division.
Witter, 32, was outpointed at Hampden Park in 2000 by Zab Judah when he challenged for the IBF version of the title. Witter responded to the only loss of his career with 15 consecutive wins inside the distance.
His 32-year-old opponent is a former holder of the WBO version of the title, having lost that belt to Judah in 2003. "It's going to be a technical fight with explosive battles thrown in. Corley is very good and a dangerous fighter," said Witter. "I know he is the kind of fighter who carries plenty of power. But there will only be one winner on the night."
