Athletics: Warring Sprinters to Be Kept Apart
UK Athletics will name two 4x100 metres relay teams so that Darren Campbell and Dwain Chambers do not have to run together.
UK Athletics is set to name two 4x100 metres relay teams for the match against China, Russia and the United States at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Saturday, giving them the opportunity to put warring sprinters Darren Campbell and Dwain Chambers in different squads.
The full team for the match is set to be announced today. Chambers is confirmed in the 100m and Campbell is due to fly to the match after appearing in tomorrow's Celtic Cup in Falkirk, expected to be his last individual 100m before retiring.
Following the relay squad's victory at the European Championships in Gothenburg, Campbell did not join his team-mates Chambers, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis on the lap of honour and it seems inconceivable that the 32-year-old Sale sprinter could now appear in a relay team along with Chambers.
"I believe I've given my all for my country," said Campbell. "I feel extremely proud and privileged to have been able to wear the British vest but, you know, in life everything comes to an end so you know I'll definitely be retiring in the next week."
