Mickelson Holds on for Second Major

Golf: Just as he did in last year's masters, Phil Mickelon birdied the last hole to win the weather-delayed US PGA title at Baltusrol.
Phil Mickelson held his nerve to claim his second major title with a one-shot victory in the weather-delayed U.S. PGA Championship at Baltusrol.

Left-hander Mickelson had a one shot lead last night when lightning forced a suspension in final-round play but came back today to complete a two-over-par 72 to finish at four-under, 276.

Just as in last year's Masters, he concluded his round with a birdie. The American had been briefly caught at three under by Australian Steve Elkington and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn when he bogeyed the par-three 16th but his birdie at the last gave him the title.

Elkington, the 1995 champion at Riviera, carded a 71 to share second place with Bjorn (72) at three under with world No1 Tiger Woods a further stroke back in a tie for fourth, having closed with a 68 yesterday.

Tiger Woods finished two shots back, level with David Love III.
