The weekend's highlights
Stars of the weekend
The Commonwealth Games brought and end to the British men's 4x100m relay team's Keystone Cops approach to major championship finals. Now that the gentle art of passing a stick from hand to hand appears to have been mastered, there should be no one within spitting distance of Dwain Chambers, pictured below, Darren Campbell, Jason Gardener and Marlon Devonish tomorrow.
Best of the rest
Amazingly, the great Sergei Bubka only won one European pole vault title, in 1986, but the gold has gone to Russia or the former Soviet Union on each occasion since 1971. The Germans could well break that stranglehold, and possibly manage a clean sweep of the medals. Tim Lobinger tops the European rankings at 5.90m while his compatriots Lars Boergeling and Danny Ecker won't be far below him today.
