Cricket: Jones Returns to the Glamorgan Frontline
Glamorgan will play their England fast bowler Simon Jones against Somerset tomorrow after leaving him out of their championship side last week, not because of any pressure applied by the national management but as a response to an injury crisis.
The seamer Alex Wharf aggravated a hip injury last Friday, the spinner Dean Cosker broke a finger the following day, while their one-day opening bowler Andrew Davies was injured during a league match on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Jones was dropped by England and left out by Glamorgan last week and left wondering when he would next get a game with his agent admitting a change of counties was a possibility. The Glamorgan coach John Derrick said Jones would not be guaranteed a start against Somerset, only for fate to intervene.
"I am a Welshman and I want to play for Glamorgan," said Jones, who held talks about his future with Derrick and the Welsh county's captain Robert Croft on Saturday.
"I appreciate Glamorgan had a difficult choice to make last week and I understand why I was left out of the side to play Hampshire.
"I did not feel right bowling for England against West Indies at Lord's. I just needed to get straight back out in the middle. That did not happen and I have to make up for it this week."
Derrick said: "We have been very honest with Simon. He will be with us in Taunton and we need him to perform. He needs to show that he is not just back to full fitness but also at the top of his game."
