David Hasselhoff Battles Alcoholism
Former Baywatch star, David Hasselhoff, is reportedly continuing to fight a drinking problem at the Betty Ford clinic.
Publicist Judy Katz said in a statement, "David Hasselhoff has checked himself into the Betty Ford Center. He realized his social drinking had increased more than he was comfortable with, and he decided to do something about it." Katz did not comment on an article in the National Enquirer that stated Hasselhoff suffered from alcohol poisoning due to a binge last month.
It was reported in the tabloids that Hasselhoff checked himself into the Betty Ford Clinic in Palm Springs, California in late June and checked himself out only two days later. Reportedly he showed up sans luggage at the Desert Springs Marriott Resort and Spa, and allegedly was found by hotel staff the next day unconscious next to an empty minibar. Reportedly, paramedics revived the actor and brought him to Eisenhower Medical Center. He was treated for alcohol poisoning and then sent back to the Betty Ford Center.
Could it be possible that Hasselhoff is suffering from a mid-life crisis of some sort? He will be 50 on July 17, sometimes a hard thing for a former sex symbol to face. Hasselhoff was very popular in the 80s with the TV series, Knight Rider, and he was surprisingly successful as an international singer, even though his songs never really sold in the U.S. His career was resurrected by his role on Baywatch and he reported back to duty as a resident sex symbol. He left Baywatch to star in a new syndicated series, Double Cross. Hasselhoff's character, Mitch, was killed off in the Baywatch finale and only months later he was double-crossed when financing fell through on Double Cross and the show was nixed. His latest venture is to try and re-establish himself by making a Knight Rider movie and having a Baywatch reunion. The struggles with both of these projects may be pushing him toward his recent abuses of alcohol.
