Depleted Lions Abandon Training

Rugby: Lions Tour: Jonny Wilkinson and Gavin Henson have been ruled out of Saturday's third Test between the Lions and New Zealand in Auckland.
Jonny Wilkinson and Gavin Henson have been ruled out of Saturday's third Test between the Lions and New Zealand in Auckland. Fly-half Wilkinson is suffering from another "stinger" injury to his neck and shoulder area, while centre Henson has a similar problem.

Lions medical staff, though, have allayed fears Wilkinson faces another long lay-off, claiming he could be fit to play next week if there were a game.

Joining Wilkinson and Henson on the sidelines are fly-half Charlie Hodgson (concussion), centre Ollie Smith (ribs), prop Andrew Sheridan (ankle) and lock Ben Kay (eye).

The sidelined players meant the Lions were unable to train today, and there are several players with injury issues still hanging over them, including skipper Gareth Thomas, prop Gethin Jenkins and utility back Shane Horgan. It is hoped there will be no further injury withdrawals though, with head coach Sir Clive Woodward due to announce his Test team tomorrow.

Woodward remains upbeat of fielding a powerful Test 22, which should include prop Graham Rowntree, who was cleared at a disciplinary hearing today after being cited for punching during the 17-13 victory over Auckland.
