United States Political Activism: How Political Activism Affects Our Society
The politics of a society affects its members in many ways, and all are involved in political activism, whether they realize it or not.
Political activism occurs when the members within a governed society express their opinions by means of various words and actions that address current policies and those who carry out these doctrines. In democracies, where individuals are given the freedom to make choices about the way they want their country to be run, political activism can range from simply voting to more influential activities like petitioning, voicing opinions, campaigning for specific people and issues, and even running for elected office.
Political activism in non-democracies can take the form of not only nonviolent mass demonstrations and strikes, but also more powerful practices like militant action that is used as a means of opposing or supporting a controversial issue, entity or person. In order for individuals to be truly politically active, they must first be motivated to take a stand in their beliefs for or against a particular issue. Next, they must become fully aware of the issue they're confronting and its potential negative and positive impact on society.
Once they feel comfortable with all the intricacies of the issue, political activists must then establish the most effective measures for supporting their chosen position and take the appropriate actions. One such practice is volunteering time in a grassroots organization or even forming a new advocacy network, for one mustn't forget that political activism is indeed a method of raising social consciousness.
