In an attempt to help out the non-experienced bullpen, the Houston Astros made a trade with the New York Yankees.
In the trade, the Astros acquired 32-year-old reliever Dan Miceli, while the Yankees received either a player to be named or cash compensation. (Not that the Yankees need more cash.)
What does this add to the Astros arsenal?
The main thing Miceli adds to the roster is experience.
Even before he sets foot in the Houston bullpen, Miceli can say that he has more experience than Astros relievers Octavio Dotel, Mike Gallo, Brad Lidge, Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos and Ricky Stone combined.
That in itself is reason to believe why he could give the Astros that playoff spark.
In addition, he is versatile with his experience in being a middle reliever, setup and, on special occasions, a closer.
His 11-year career speaks for itself, as he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and currently the Yankees.
During that time, he acquired a (34-41) record, with 33 saves and a 4.73 ERA.
This year alone he is (1-3) with a one save and a 4.02 ERA in 34 games.
Hopefully, for Astros' fans, his proven track record will lead Houston into the playoffs.
But, will they be able to win the championship?
Miceli is expected to be in an Astros' uniform during Wednesday's game against the Braves.
The Astros also "rang" up Colin Porter after the release of outfielder Brian L. Hunter. He will be a backup center fielder and left handed DH for the Astros.
Porter made a brief debut from May 29th through June 7th, while Hunter was injured.
